Research summary
This study aims to evaluate the impact of a community based continuity of care model (LEAP midwifery caseload team) for women living in areas of ethnic diversity and social disadvantage in South London. The LEAP caseload team at Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospitals is supported by the Lambeth Early Action Partnership (LEAP), one of the five Big Lottery funded programmes which takes a public health approach to prevention and early intervention offering a wide range of support and community services from pregnancy and up to a child’s fourth birthday, and aiming to reduce health inequalities and improve health, social and economic outcomes for women, children and families. The LEAP team target women with complex social factors and provide an enhanced place-based level of services across health and social care.
We will explore experiences of maternity care and longer term influence into the first year post birth among women receiving the LEAP model, as well as experiences of healthcare providers and local stakeholders to understand implementation and potential scale up of similar models.
