Research summary
Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage (TAPVD) is a heterogeneous form of congenital heart disease characterised by the abnormal return of the veins draining the lungs (pulmonary veins) into structures other than their usual site in the heart (ie other than the left atrium). This abnormality is corrected surgically in the newborn period.
Late complications can arise in these patients several years after the initial surgery, and for that reason, patients are kept under review by congenital cardiologists throughout their life. Follow-up routinely includes an ultrasound examination of the heart and pulmonary veins (echocardiogram). However, imaging of the pulmonary veins in this population can be very challenging with standard echocardiography, particularly in the adult population. Magnetic Resonance Imaging offers a noninvasive method giving high-quality imaging of cardiac anatomy and allows the accurate measurement of the sizes of cardiac structures, but is not generally regarded as a routine investigation in this population.
In this study we are aiming to review the clinical, echocardiographic and MRI findings of patients post TAPVD repair at the University Hospitals Southampton, in order to determine if MRI offers additional information over echocardiography that is useful in the longterm follow up of these patients.
