  • Research summary

People at high-risk of diabetes can prevent diabetes by changing their diet, losing weight and exercising more. In recognition of this, National Guidelines state that healthcare workers should identify people who might be at risk (for example due to their weight or family history), and give them accurate advice to help them prevent diabetes.
However, some recent studies suggest that people at high-risk of diabetes are not being informed they are at high-risk, and also that they are not being given accurate advice to help them reduce their risk of eventually developing diabetes. This study will explore these issues further.

This study will use questionnaires to assess people's beliefs and knowledge about diabetes, and also ask questions about whether people have been told about diabetes and what they can do to prevent it. The questionnaire will be completed by people at high-risk of diabetes. In addition, the study will also carry out telephone interviews and focus groups to try to explore these issues more deeply.
