  • Research summary

What are the most common barriers to physical activity seen in type 1 diabetes, and which factors contribute most to their worsening or improvement?

The most commonly experienced barriers to physical activity in type 1 diabetes have been only studied within a handful of academic papers, and thus the field lacks research quantity. Factors contributing, both negatively and positively, to barriers haven’t fully been identified. Medical treatments, access to information, and clinician communication will all be addressed within this study. Physical activity is becoming more and more prevalent in popular culture, and rising levels of inactivity and obesity are being reported and addressed within popular culture. General populations will also seek to identify the most prevalent barriers to physical activity, so they will be able to both overcome their barriers and assist others in minimising theirs. Understanding why a particular population is not as active as another is important for society at large. A member of the non-diabetic population may also experience barriers to physical activity that the diabetic population experiences, and thus this research project can benefit society as a whole.

This study will use a 60-item survey over eight (8) weeks to assess patient opinions and knowledge, as well as identify barriers to physical activity. Participants will complete the survey either online or via a paper copy. Recruitment will happen mainly online, via various social media platforms as well as advertisement throughout NHS Tayside Diabetes Clinics and University of Dundee buildings. The participants that will be eligible are those diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, aged 18 or over, with the ability to read and write in English.
