  • Research summary

Patient education is one of the major pillars of clinical governance as well as a major component of “prehabilitation” in enhanced recovery programmes. Over the past few years a paradigm shift has occurred in the doctor-patient partnership, patients are more empowered nowadays and encouraged to participate with decision-making about their management plans. Patients may understand a potential management option better and be more satisfied with service provision through the use of additional aids to help memory retention. Aids consist of brochures, decision tables, videos and computer programs which address prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. There is no evidence regarding the effectiveness of aids during orthopaedic consultations. Consequently funds are not always available to purchase these items for NHS clinics. The aim of this study is to assess patient satisfaction and understanding arising from consultations about knee meniscal pathology with or without the use of an anatomical knee model.\n\nPatients will be randomly assigned to undergo a consultation either with or without the use of a knee model. Randomisation will be undertaken through the use of a computerised random number generator. The consultations will include the same information about the pathology and operation. The patient will be free to ask any questions. After the consultation the patient will be asked to complete a validated questionnaire to assess patient satisfaction with an additional question to assess understanding of the anatomical basis of their condition. \n
