  • Research summary

Obesity is a widespread problem and has been increasingly linked as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF), a form of irregular heartbeat. Kir2.1 is a protein expressed on the cell surface of leucocytes (white blood cells). We aim to see whether patients with a high BMI and AF have an increased expression of the gene that codes for this protein compared to those with a normal BMI and AF.\n\nPatients will have a blood sample taken and a laboratory technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will be used to quantify gene expression within the patient’s white blood cells.
