Research programme
The Paediatric Liver Centre King’s College Hospital is one of the busiest in the world and the largest in Europe. One of three specialist centres in the UK it has a large catchment area covering the South East of England, Scotland, Ireland and with referrals from Europe and the middle East. Though Paediatric liver disease is relatively rare, it carries an immense burden of illness with liver transplantation often the only available treatment. Diagnoses are often elusive though with the continuing advances in the field of molecular genetics, the previously undiagnosed are now within reach and with this understanding come more effective and less invasive treatment.. The Paediatric Liver Centre at Kings has a long established diagnostic archive (established over 30 years ago), which became a formal Biobank in 2012. The Paediatric Liver Biobank has directly resulted in world class research outputs including description of the genetic bases for disorders of cholestasis, the immunological consequences of Alagille syndrome and discovery of a new variant of Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency *the King’s variant) Children and young people are followed by the Paediatric Liver Centre until transition to the adult centre at King’s.
