Data collection arrangements
The KCL-Cardiovascular Diseases Registry will contain data collected during routine delivery of cardiology care to patients at two large London hospitals between 2012-2022. Using class-leading software, powered by machine-learning artificial intelligence, data will be extracted from the electronic patient notes and structured to facilitate analysis and research. During the extraction process, identifiable information will be removed (i.e, name, hospital and NHS ID) or weakened (i.e., date of birth and address.) The rich clinical data will be linked to external datasets via trusted third parties, to assess important patient-oriented outcomes such as hospital readmissions and cause of death. At all times the database will be stored within an NHS firewall and subject to NHS Information governance protocols and audit to ensure safety. After completion of the database, it will be stored for 10 years.
Research programme
The KCL-Cardiovascular Diseases Registry will be a large and rich patient dataset, providing unrivalled insight into the contemporary management of cardiovascular disease in a large, socially diverse and multi-ethnic urban population. The level of data stored within the electronic health record on each individual surpasses what can be achieved in dedicated prospective registry studies or national audit programmes. This will allow researchers to assess evolving patterns of cardiovascular disease, generate novel risk prediction tools and test the success of contemporary treatments in a large real-world cohort. This will prove an invaluable tool in our goal to advance disease prevention, refine strategies for treatment and improve the cardiovascular health and well-being of our local population.
