Research summary
New recommendations for consenting patients for deceased kidney transplantation suggested that best practice is to give potential recipients the choice about certain donor derived risks. The potential risks include: elderly donors, donors with active brain cancers, donors with a history of cancer and donors who exhibit a high risk behaviour putting them at increased risk of viral infections. In 2014 we adopted the recommendations into our practice, modifying our consenting process to include donor derived risks. The purpose of the study would be to see what, if any, donor derived risks patients were willing to accept whilst waiting for a kidney transplant.
The study will be conducted by analysis of anonymised patient data already collected, including the donor risk choices recipients have made. The patients donor choices will then be analysed against patient demographics including age, sex, history of previous cancer, time on waiting list, time on dialysis, modality of dialysis, history of previous transplants and possibly history of previous high risk behaviour to see if there are any factors that influence patient choice/willingness to take risks. This would help us inform the consenting process for future patients, both locally and nationally.
