  • Data collection arrangements

KHP Cancer Biobank has supplied samples and data to investigators for over 20 years. Sample types collected include blood, tissue, aspirates, saliva, cheek scrapes, urine and faeces.

Consent is sought from patients who have or may have a cancer diagnosis as follows:
    1. Surplus tissue from patients diagnosed with breast, bladder, colorectal, gynaecological, head & neck, pancreatic, prostate, adrenal/renal, testicular, thoracic and UGI cancer or precancerous lesions (including associated disease recurrence in other organs); lymphoma, leukaemia, MPN and myeloma (collectively 'Blood Cancers). This is an enduring consent and includes access to surplus diagnostic materials held at other establishments.
    2. Blood samples collected before, during and after treatment with a 24 month 'active' written consent period during which verbal consent only is required for subsequent blood draws.
    3. Core biopsies or aspirates taken specifically for research purposes either at the same time as a diagnostic procedure or as a separate event.
    4. Urine and saliva sample collected during and after treatment.
    5. Demographic, clinical and follow-up data.
    6. Images, including digitised slides, X-Ray, CT and MTI scans.

The Biobank also seeks consent from patients with sickle cell anaemia and healthy volunteers (local staff/ students, family members and patients undergoing a hospital procedure but are otherwise healthy, such as hip replacement or tooth extraction).

The Biobank Access Sub-Committee may also approve projects that require access to the diagnostic archives where consent has not been sought. Only Biobank staff access the archives and samples are pseudonymised prior to release.

Where possible, samples are collected fresh, processed and either frozen or fixed to maximise use and retain viability.
Samples are split and mirrored collections stored in different locations on the Guy's site to minimise impact of a catastrophic incident.

  • Research programme

Sample, sample derivatives, images and data will be made available to researchers from any health associated organisation with a study that provides further insight into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and precancerous diseases. Investigators may apply from academic or commercial establishments, which may be local, national or international. Biobank resources will only be released to investigators with a scientifically valid study; with proven funding to complete the study; who agree to share their subsequent findings with the research community and formalise these conditions in a material transfer and/or data sharing agreement.
