Research summary
We shall examine the relationship between attitudes to mental health problems and actual mental health in an Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) population. This will involve administering a brief questionnaire (Knowledge and Attitudes to Mental Health: KAMH) that assesses mental health knowledge, good mental health behaviours, mental health stigma to others, mental health self-stigma, help-seeking behaviour, avoidant coping and social desirability. We aim to collect diagnosis/formulation information of the service -user so we will ask for consent from both parent and service-user for the treating clinician to fill this information in. This will be completed onto the clinical information form. Along with the KAMH, participants will complete questionnaires related to their mental health; 1) the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, a brief behavioural screening questionnaire including internalising and externalising subscales. 2) Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-A) a brief diagnostic tool for symptoms of depression that has been adapted for use in adolescents and 3) the General Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7) questionnaire used as a screening tool and severity measure for generalised anxiety disorder.
