Research summary
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) have a Service User Reference Group (SURG). The SURG is independent to TEWV, and is facilitated by Skills for People. The SURG is made up of self-advocates, their supporters, and a facilitator who works for Skills for People. The SURG meet monthly to discuss issues of healthcare and services delivered by TEWV. One of these discussions looked at care offered to people with learning disabilities who are detained under the mental health act. The SURG decided that they wanted to conduct a research project finding out more about the experiences of people with a learning disability who had lived on inpatient wards. They approached the TEWV Psychology Research and Governance Lead who asked for a qualified clinical psychologist working in TEWV learning disability services to support the project.
