Research summary
Shoulder pain is a common problem seen by physiotherapists and it can be very debilitating for patients, therefore it is important we can reduce pain quickly. Commonly it is the small muscles and tendons of the shoulder that are the reason for pain and limited function. Previous research has shown that the treatment of this shoulder problem with exercise is as, if not more, effective than surgery. Physiotherapists use a variety of exercises to treat shoulder muscle and tendon problems; however we are not sure which type of exercise is the most effective at reducing pain. Greater understanding of which exercises are more effective will improve the patient care, ensuring they receive the most effective and efficient treatment.
Patients with shoulder pain that has come on after a period of increased activity will be eligible to be involved in the study.
The study will be carried out in an NHS Physiotherapy Outpatients department.
The study will overall last for approximately 3 months- participants will be carrying out one of two types of exercise on a daily basis for 6 weeks. Participants will be assessed on a weekly basis with progression of exercises if appropriate. They will complete one outcome measure on a weekly basis and the other at the start and end of the trial.REC name
