Research summary
COVID-19 is an infectious disease that unevenly affects different individuals with outcomes ranging from asymptomatic disease to severe pneumonia and multi-organ failure. Analysis of patient factors that might contribute to worse outcomes may help in directing local and national protocols to improve outcomes in high risk patients. Some factors have already been associated with a greater likelihood of severe disease, including but not limited to, older age, male gender and the presence of co-morbidities. There has also been widespread interest in the apparent worse outcomes of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic patients compared to their Caucasian counterparts. Hackney benefits from being the 6th most diverse borough in London. We would like to perform a retrospective observational study identifying outcomes in all patients admitted to Homerton Hospital with a confirmed SARS-Cov-2 positive swab. We would like to compare the severity of disease between different ethnic groups.
