  • Research summary

Wheezing illnesses are episodes of difficulty in breathing associated with whistling breath sounds. They are extremely common in preschool children under six years old. Most episodes get better on their own, but many children have frequent wheezing. These can lead to emergency hospital visits, missed preschool, and continuous symptoms that stop them doing the things they enjoy. There are treatments available which can help reduce wheezing episodes. However, doctors and nurses are often less sure about when to start these in very young children because current guidance is not very clear.

The purpose of this study is to work with patient families and health professionals to co-develop a practical care guide for preschool wheeze that is shared by all doctors and nurses. It will include clear and consistent information and practical advice for families.

Using one-to-one interviews with families, doctors, and nurses, we want to understand why treating preschool children with wheeze can be difficult, and what the care guide should include. We will then design the care guide with families and health professionals in two online workshops (group meetings), before testing the care guide in hospital and a few GP settings in Leicester. We will then collect feedback from families and health professionals to help us improve the care guide further, and information from medical records to see if preschool wheeze symptoms have improved in children since being on the care guide, before introducing it into more healthcare settings.
