Research summary
The aim of this study is to examine how children, aged 3 to 8 years old with diabetes type-1, are currently educated in Yorkhill children's hospital by the clinicians, and how this educational process can be improved through technology.
Currently, clinicians are educating children about the basics of their condition (food, insulin, exercise) with the use of plastic food toys in dedicated sessions. These toys are not interactive and do not provide feedback to the children other than an illustration of real world objects.
The first objective is to understand the clinicians’ approach to education and what educational goals and techniques they are mainly focusing on.
The second objective is to see the how the plastic food toys are used and to identify what is missing and what can be improved in the interactions with these toys.
The last objective is to understand how children are impacted from those sessions. Namely, we want to observe the children’s actions and reactions to the education, the questions they ask, the way they are interacting with the toys and how they would they want this interaction to be improved.
Ιn order to improve the existing approach we need to observe how it is currently been delivered. The parents of the participants would be asked to choose between two ways of observation; through a researcher taking notes and audio recording or a video camera recording the session.
The sessions will be held in Yorkhill children's hospital by the clinicians as they are done normally. The study will last 3 months and parents will give their consent for the recording of their children's session. The qualitative analysis of the observations will help the researchers develop the new system, by providing the requirements and the guidelines for its design.
