Research summary
Patients with kidney disease can develop bleeding symptoms due to the build up of toxins ('uraemia') that inhibits normal blood clotting. Platelets are small cells in the blood that form the 'bricks' of a blood clot and it is known that these do not work properly in patients with kidney failure. The research project that we propose would investigate the effects of kidney failure on tests of blood clotting and platelet function using tests in our laboratory. This research will include patients see in the renal ('kidney) failure clinical at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS trust who would be recruited at the time of clinic. In addition to usual routine clinic blood tests an addition 10-20ml of blood would be taken for the research. We hope that we can learn more about the blood clotting in patients with kidney failure and the effect of kidney failure on our laboratory blood clotting tests.
