Research summary
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are microscopically small ‘parcels’ released from cells in all organs of the body, including the kidney. These vesicles contain protein and nucleic acids from the cells of origin and so are a rich source of potential biomarkers for renal and urinary tract diseases. EVs also have a number of potential functions, including defence against urine infections and a role in kidney stone formation.
We therefore want to examine the utility of urine EVs as a source of biomarkers for kidney disorders, and also examine their functions.
