Research summary
The primary goal of the project is to understand human ageing using 3D models and explant human skin, which is surplus tissue from surgery. Explant human skin and commercially available 3D skin models will be prepared and cultured for 7 days. Whilst in culture, 3D models and explant human skin will be exposed to compounds to investigate how the biology of the skin alters and how ageing endpoints are affected. Patients will be approached for consent prior to surgery. The collection of skin will not impact the surgery or have negative impacts on the patient. Only surplus skin will be collected so patients will not have any excess skin removed unnecessarily.
A research nurse will identify patients who will be receiving surgery where surplus skin may become available. Patients will be provided with details on the project so they can give informed consent.REC name
