  • Research summary

Ninety per cent of patients with hip fracture have falls.
Falls in elderly is a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
A significant drop in blood pressure after standing is called as 'Postural hypotension'.
Postural hypotension is an important cause of falls in elderly. To record postural hypotension, the blood pressure needs to be taken in lying and standing position.

To measure blood pressure on standing patient needs to stand. Most patients of fracture neck femur, and many other patients cannot stand. Hence, an important diagnostic condition is missed.
We propose a different method of recording postural blood pressure. In this proposed method the patient does not have to stand. Only the blood pressure in a resting and elevated arm is recorded.

We propose to record the difference in blood pressure in the arm and then correlate this with the routine postural blood pressure.

Readings will be statistically correlated to draw a meaningful conclusion.

Patients will be recruited from the falls clinic, and from the medical assessment unit.

Initial blood pressure recordings carried out in new method on myself, are encouraging.
