  • Data collection arrangements

Tissue blocks and blood samples will be hosted by and stored in the pre-existing facilities at Wales Cancer Bank based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.\nEligible patients will be approached by members of their local thyroid cancer multidisciplinary team who are experienced in the management of this disease and who have appropriate experience in consent procedures. Only once the diagnosis is confirmed will the patient be considered for inclusion in the study. Only patients who have adequate mental capacity to provide informed consent will be approached. Patients will be provided with a verbal explanation and written information leaflet and given as much time as they need to decide on whether they wish to participate.\nPatients participating in this project will be agreeing to any surplus anaplastic thyroid cancer tissue along with an optional blood sample being sent to the Wales Cancer Bank for storage until a suitable research project is approved by the iNATT steering committee. They also have the option of having their clinical information collected in the pre-existing and Information Commissioner’s Office registered Thyroid Cancer Forum-UK (TCF-UK) national database. The patient will not be approached for any further tissue or blood samples.\nPatients will be assigned a unique identifier number by the Wales Cancer Bank and this will be used by the WCB to track and store specimens anonymously.\nQualifying relatives will be able to provide retrospective consent on behalf of deceased patients if they feel their relative would have wished to participate had they known of the project.\nPatients who have provided consent for their tissue samples to be used for non-specified research purposes can have their tissue transferred to the iNATT project where appropriate.\n

  • Research programme

The primary objective of this project is to establish an international anaplastic thyroid cancer tissue collection to help facilitate basic and translational research opportunities.\nThere is no direct research question that the project itself addresses at this stage. The research proposals that subsequently arise as a result of this project will be generated by accredited research parties from the UK and potentially internationally. These research proposals will need to be submitted to the interNational Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Tissue Bank and Database Project (iNATT) Steering Committee for assessment of relevance. As the volume of material collected per patient is expected to be of small volume, by virtue of the specimen comprising core biopsy or fine needle aspirate material, research proposals will need to be prioritised according to the potential benefits the proposed research offers with the priority being projects that may lead to the identification of potential therapeutic targets. \nThe steering committee will be multidisciplinary and will include nationally respected researchers and thyroid cancer clinicians.\n
