Research summary
National governmental policies and international healthcare research emphasises the importance of Patient and Family-Centred Care (PFCC). This benchmark study will explore the feasibility and acceptability of a PFCC bundle in intensive care (ICU) from the perspectives of intensive care patients, their families and nurses. We will engage with these three stakeholders to identify facilitators and barriers to a PFCC bundle in ICU. Further, we will develop a list of care activities that will form a part of a PFCC bundle in ICU, thus helping to transform care delivery and improve the patient and family experience in ICU. \n\nThis study offers a ’bottom-up’ approach taking seriously the experiences of ICU patients, family members and ICU nurses in examining the feasibility and acceptability of a PFCC bundle in the ICU. The study will generate novel insights into what exactly a PFCC bundle in ICU means and which care activities are acceptable from the perspective of the three stakeholders. This is in line with policy objectives and the quality agenda of the Scottish Government and NHS Lothian.
