Research summary
The purpose of this study is to understand how the timings of ordinary working practices and related patterns of travel and the delivery of goods matter for the timing and totality of energy use and travel. The aim is to identify opportunities for shifting the timings of ordinary working arrangements as a means of steering demand for energy and travel, to reduce carbon emissions, and improve cost savings to the NHS. This will be achieved through a programme of empirical research, approximately 40 interviews with NHS staff (including staff responsible for healthcare provision, administration and management; the organisation and delivery of goods; and management of facilities, estates, travel and sustainability), at identified significant sites at three large acute hospitals. The study will last for approximately 9 months (3 months in each hospital) and staff participating in the research will take part in 1-2, one hour long in-depth interviews.
