  • Research summary

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy are common symptoms affecting up to 85% of women. Severe nausea and vomiting or hyperemesis gravidarum affects 0.5% of women and results in frequent and often prolonged hospital admissions. This has cost and capacity implications for NHS institutions and psychosocial and financial effects on a woman and her family, especially if she already has children. This study will assess whether treating women daily with fluids and medicines will be as effective as keeing them in hospital continuously for treatment. It will work as a randomised control trial where outpatient management will be directly compared to the traditional inpatient management.
