Research summary
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects on the airways when administered a substance called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by inhalation. ATP is naturally found within cells of the human body. It can be safely given in a research setting via inhalation as it causes a short-lived response. In this study we are interested in the response of the airways and lungs to ATP.
ATP in previous studies has been safely given to both healthy volunteers and patients with asthma. The purpose of this study is to administer ATP to patients with mild asthma and closely observe effects on the airways of the lungs by means of performing lung function (blowing) tests and by monitoring cough, wheeze and shortness of breath. The outcome from this study may help determine the use of this test in future research studies.
