Research summary
Infective endocarditis is a rare and lethal disease caused by an infection of the inner lining of the heart and is associated with numerous risk factors. Those with an underlying structural heart defect are most at risk, and up to 40% of people with the disease will die within a year of diagnosis. The most at-risk groups have changed over recent decades, primarily due to the reduction in cases of rheumatic heart disease, and the increasing number of healthcare associated infections. This study will analyse current data from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to determine if there are any significant associations between disease cause and patient outcomes, looking specifically at risk factors, disease presentation, and patient mortality.
The continually changing profile of infective endocarditis introduces new challenges to how healthcare professionals manage and treat the disease. This study will provide a deeper insight into the current profile of infective endocarditis in the local area. Analysing trends in the data will highlight early predictors of disease progression and patient outcomes, and support healthcare professions in determining the best possible course of treatment for patients with infective endocarditis.
