Research summary
Respiratory diseases carry a significant burden of morbidity and mortality. Of relevance to our local population, the North West has one of the highest national mortality rates from lung disease. Research into the factors that influence progression of lung disease is needed to reduce this burden. Although the role of the immune system in disease causation has been relatively well studied, the influence of changes in the immune system over time on disease progression has received comparatively little attention. As respiratory conditions progress, they often lead to recurrent chest infections, which can lead to stepwise decline in functional status. This study will investigate how the immune system changes over time, looking for associations with disease progression over time. It will also assess how patients with chronic lung disease resolve acute infections compared to those without chronic lung disease.
