Research summary
The study falls into two parts and looks at approaches to better communicate cancer survival statistics.
The first part of the proposal relates to generating a model for 10 cancer sites to predict individualised estimates on survival following cancer, broken down by whether deaths are due to cancer or due to other causes using a relative survival approach to estimating crude probabilities. The output of the project would be a web-tool whereby the relevant output from the model would be presented with “sliders” for controls over age, and drop-down options for gender.
The second part of the proposal, which may well be considered separately for data release relates to the estimate of loss in life expectancy across a range of cancer sites. Cancer patients generally have lower remaining life expectancy than someone of the same age and sex in the general population. We will estimate the average number of years that are lost from life expectancy following a cancer diagnosis.
The study will not be collecting new data, but will use routine NHS data available in the National Cancer Data Repository (NCDR).
