Research summary
In this study, we will work with children to:
1) Understand the assent process from their perspective
2) Use this understanding to develop resources to promote meaningful dialogue between children and researchers with the overall aim of improving the quality of the research conversation and the assent process for children.Specifically, this research draws directly from children’s experiences and intends to reflect their views and preferences. It builds on existing literature, complementing previous work which has explored the views of adolescents and young adults (14-21 years) and their parents on improving the informed consent process (Baker et al, 2013). This study will run on two sites at the same time: 1) Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust and 2) The Children’s Trust, Tadworth. It will include children with and without learning disabilities who have participated in research. In Phase 1 we will elicit these children’s views and experiences of the research conversation and the process of assent using semi-structured interviews with them and where appropriate, their parents/carers and/or clinical staff. In Phase 2, we will work in partnership with these children through a series of workshops to discuss and develop possible resources and materials to promote dialogue about research and enhance the process of engaging children in research that directly involves them.
