Research summary
All children suffer from Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) conditions at some stage in their early lives. ENT conditions pose a significant challenge to NHS services and have a major impact on the wellbeing of children and their families. To develop meaningful research and outcomes that are relevant to parents and children, it is important to involve them in the research process. Therefore, this study will aim to create with parents a set of important outcomes to be included in future research in children with ENT conditions. We aim to recruit parents of 20 children with ENT conditions up to the age of 11 from five North London boroughs. There were will be two avenues for recruitment: through the NHS or directly through the community. Recruitment will be through one of three ways: face to face, via telephone, or via email. Two focus groups will be organised, each with up to ten participants. One focus group will consist of parents of children with ENT conditions under the age of 6 year, the other of parents of children aged 6 to 11 years. The focus groups will be organised at a time and place most easily accessible to the parents. The focus groups will consist of participants’ discussions on important areas for future research based on topics provided. Parents will be asked to ‘rank’ topics according to order of importance and reasoning behind their decision-making. A final discussion to reach consensus and rank of outcomes will be made. The data collected for the focus groups will consist of written notes and transcripts of audio recordings. The notes and audio recordings will be summarised into a word document to identify the key areas of importance as well as the order of which the parents found them important.
