  • Research summary

The proposed pilot project is aimed at informing the completion of quality applications for external funding to support a lager programme of research on diabetes care. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality, disability and expenditure worldwide. Growing evidence of improved outcomes (mainly patient and professional satisfaction and some evidence on controlled weight, blood glucose and blood pressure) supports shared-decision-making (SDM) as an effective primary care intervention for diabetes. However, only a few countries have actually adopted it. Such countries include, for example, the United Kingdom (UK), United-States-of-America, Canada and Australia (Da Silva, 2012; 6th International Shared Decision Making Conference, 2011). In other European countries there is awareness that patients play a crucial role in decision-making, and SDM policies could be considered as innovative strategies to promote the actual implementation of patient rights legislation and strengthen primary care (e.g. Cyprus; http://europatientrights.eu/).

Objectives: The objectives of this study are: (i) To gather evidence from the literature on shared-decision making initiatives and their outcomes, with particular attention to diabetes care; (ii) To prepare a catalogue of best SDM practices in diabetes care and discuss possible adaptability across European country settings; (iii) To inform the development and testing of a tool to be employed in future stages of the research to value SDM model across different European settings. More specifically this project will cover two countries, the UK and Cyprus.
