  • Research summary

Bladder and bowel symptoms are common among men and women with primary and secondary progressive MS. Leakage of urine (urinary incontinence - UI) and bowel control problems (faecal incontinence - FI) can occur on their own or together but little is known about how many people experience these symptoms and to what extent.
In addition, continence difficulties can impose restrictions on daily activities and cause impact on quality of life and sexual matters for those affected. These issues have not been fully explored so the view of people experiencing such difficulties is unknown.
The aim of this project therefore is to accurately find out how many individuals with MS experience UI and/or FI and to explore the impact of these symptoms on quality of life and sexual matters. This will provide valuable information in order to really understand the scale of the problem from the individual’s perspective. In turn it is hoped that healthcare practitioners will better understand the importance of these issues to those who experience them.
Alongside the patient perspective of this study, anonymised data from primary care records will be extracted for individuals with progressive MS and incontinence (not those necessarily involved in the survey study) to evaluate the demand on healthcare resources in primary care.
