Research summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed hospitals under unprecedented pressure, requiring a rapid and drastic reorganization of research systems and clinical services to meet urgent demand. At Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), one of the most research-active Trusts in the United Kingdom, all non-essential and non-COVID-19-related clinical research has been halted. Vital elements of the clinical research infrastructure like GSTT’s Clinical Research Facility have been repurposed, and research staff have been redeployed to clinical or administrative roles within GSTT or elsewhere. Within this context, this study asks: what are the impacts of COVID-19 on GSTT’s clinical research system, and what contribution has the clinical research sytem made to the emergency response to the pandemic? \n\nThrough an in-depth qualitative case study of GSTT’s research system we aim to document and assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the organization, governance and delivery of clinical research within GSTT. We also aim to document and assess the contributions of GSTT’s clinical research system to the hospital’s emergency response to Covid-19
