Research summary
This research study aims to determine if there is a link between loss of peripheral (side) vision and reading speed following a stroke, and how this may impact on an individuals self reported visual symptoms and the implications to their quality of life.
The study will take place at planned eye outpatient follow up appointments for all patients identified with a vision problem associated with stroke. Eligible participants would include any patient booked into the orthoptist (a health professional working as part of the eye team) stroke outpatient clinic who has suffered an ischaemic (blockage) stroke, over the age of 18, can provide informed written consent and can communicate well in written and spoken English.
The study will take place in the orthoptic outpatient department of Southampton Eye Unit, based at Southampton General Hospital, University Hospital Southampton.
The study comprises one additional clinical test and one questionnaire in addition to planned outpatient testing which will take approximately 20 minutes extra to complete. Participants will have their reading speed recorded and will be asked questions about their visual symptoms. Participants will leave the study following these additional data collections.REC name
