Research summary
Every year in the UK, around 500 children and young people (CYP) are diagnosed with a brain tumour, with time to diagnosis being a major determinant of survival and long-term neurodisability. The current pandemic has had a profound negative impact on the lives of CYP and the aim of this work is to address the question “What is the impact of the SARS-CoV- 2/COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis, management, and patient journey for children and young people (aged < 16 years old at presentation) with a newly-diagnosed brain tumour in the UK?”. Using a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodological approach we aim to look at numbers of diagnoses from all 19 UK specialist neurosurgical centres, and four centres (Cambridge, Nottingham, Manchester and London) will provide in-depth data on clinical outcomes including peri-operative mortality and neurological disability at initial discharge. Qualitative work will be co-designed with CYP with the aim of hearing the voices of patients and exploring the impact of the pandemic on their journeys.
