Research summary
Obesity is a major risk factor for bowel cancer (colorectal cancer). However the effect of weight loss on bowel cancer risk is uncertain. Whilst weight loss surgery is increasingly being used in the management of obesity and is beneficial in terms of several obesity-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, its effect on the risk of developing bowel cancer risk is uncertain. This study is designed to investigate the impact of bariatric surgery on biological markers of risk of developing bowel cancer.
Patients listed for weight loss interventions at North Tyneside General Hospital will be invited to participate in this study. Data will be collected before and after the surgery, to see whether the weight loss achieved will alter the risk of developing bowel cancer in the future.REC name
