Research summary
A retrospective four year analysis to ascertain the impact of digital mammography (computerised rather than analogue film breast xray) on microcalcification (tiny flecks of calcium seen within the breast) detection and assessment on a single breast screening unit. The main focus will be to compare rates of microcalcification detection from breast screening mammograms prior to and immediately after acquiring digital mammography. It will look at the multiple steps in the assessment process that follow and are required to deliver the final outcome to screened women. The analysis of the two sets of comparable data will lead to an evaluation of current and future professional service provision; by means of radiographic, radiological and surgical time. Preliminary reports suggested that detection is much improved with digital equipment, this study is designed to test this hypothesis at local level
