Research summary
The proposed study will analyse the effects of long-term diseases including, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary artery disease, heart failure, obesity, chronic kidney disease (CKD), asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), on hospitalised patients affected by a novel coronavirus (COVID-19)\n\nWe aim to see whether the diseases mentioned above affect the duration of hospital stay, death rate, and duration of stay in the intensive care unit among patients hospitalised with novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). We also propose to assess whether any of these diseases increases the severity of COVID-19 disease and making the patients riskier to be sick enough to receive life support treatments, including breathing support with a breathing machine and a tube with a tight mask on the face or a hood (non-invasive ventilation), breathing support using breathing machine and a tube which passed through the mouth to lungs (endotracheal intubation; invasive mechanical ventilation) or breathing support using a breathing machine and a tube passed through a small slit made by doctors on the neck to lungs (tracheostomy; invasive ventilation).\n\nThe proposed research study does not involve any patients directly. However, a review of patients’ medical records is required to gather details mentioned above to conduct the study. Patient data will be collected pseudo-anonymously. A unique identifier will be assigned.\n
