Research summary
During the Covid-19 pandemic, local authorities struggles to meet their commitments for homecare provision due to staff sickness, and rapid discharge from hospitals made to free up hospital beds for Covid-19 patients. This meant that many caring tasks were taken on by family, friends and neighbours. Local Authorities were also encouraged to utilise volunteer networks to provide some outstanding care tasks. Some care recipients also cancelled part of their packages of care due to concerns about carers carrying the Covid-19 virus. We do not know what the impact of these changes is on people in receipt of homecare and whether there was an increased burden placed on family, friends and neighbours.
This study aims to understand the experiences of receiving, providing and organising homecare within the Covid-19 lockdown period. We will conduct 12 interviews from each of four groups:
1. People receiving care during the Covid-19 lockdown period
2. Social care workers and paid carers
3. Family, friends, neighbours of those receiving care
4. VolunteersThe interviews will aim to discover both positive and negative experiences discover themes within these experiences which may be used to guide future service development.
