Research summary
The aim of the research is to draw upon documentary evidence, interviews and focused ethnographic observation to explore the social impact of CCTV in three mental health wards in three separate NHS Mental Health Trusts.
The implementation and impact of electronic monitoring, especially CCTV, has been extensively examined in social scientific literature. However, little attention has been paid to the recent proliferation in the use of CCTV monitoring in certain areas of mental health hospitals, such as, patient accessed ward spaces, patient bedrooms and seclusion rooms.
There is some evaluative research which examines how staff and patients perceive CCTV cameras, what their purpose is, but very little about its relationship with patients and staff who are under the constant gaze of the cameras; or, how the cameras combine with, or stand apart from, other ward practices, such as nurse observations, and what the consequences, both intended and unintended, are of using such technology.REC name
