Research summary
Burns and scalds are among the most common paediatric injuries with approximately 57,000 children and young people presenting to the Emergency Department (ED), with approximately 3,700 admitted to hospital across the UK for further treatment. While the vast majority of these will have occurred unexpectedly, or due to a momentary lapse in concentration by parents, some may be due to neglect and a small number have been deliberately inflicted. Any burn or scald carries a significant morbidity, both physical and psychological, and a high mortality. However it can be difficult to distinguish the true accidental injuries from those that happen as a result of neglect or abuse.
We have developed and tested a Clinical Prediction Tool for use in the Emergency Departments/MIU's and Burns Units to help identify features that may be significant when considering if a burn or scald is due to neglect or maltreatment.
We also wish to explore if a version of this tool can be developed for use by child protection professionals.REC name
