Research summary
We will undertake a pragmatic multi-centre randomised controlled clinical trial to assess the acceptability and feasibility of implementation, and uptake of a complex intervention consisting of an earlier referral to the community palliative care team for patients with pain from advanced cancer. The earlier referral will also be supplemented by a toolkit to support self-management, and routine pain assessment and monitoring using an e-health monitoring tool. We hypothesise that within oncology services, early screening and referral of community based patients with pain from advanced cancer, combined with routine pain assessment and monitoring, will reduce the extent of pain and psychological distress reported by the patient. The potential cost-effectiveness and effectiveness of the intervention in relation to patient outcomes will be assessed.
160 participants will be recruited, and randomly allocated on an equal basis to receive either the intervention or usual care or standard care. Participants will be identified and recruited from oncology clinics across multiple research centres in the North of England. Participants allocated to the intervention will be referred to their local palliative care team and further intervention will take place within the palliative care setting. Participants will be followed up at 6 and 12 weeks following randomisation, with follow up for overall survival up until the final participants 12 week follow up.
