Research summary
Coronary artery disease remains a major cause of death in the UK. Inflammation is thought to contribute to clinical events in patients with coronary artery disease and Interleukin-1 is an apical molecule in the human inflammatory response. In the resent MRC ILA HEART study we demonstrated that Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) reduced inflammation following heart attacks in a 182 patient randomised controlled trial. Separately we have demonstrated that inflammation alters blood clotting. We therefore hypothesise that in stored samples from the MRC ILA Heart study samples from patients in the IL-1ra treated group will have reduced fibrin clot formation than those in the control group. To test this we will examine fibrin clot formation in stored samples from the MRC ILA HEART study in which patients were randomised to treatment with IL-1ra or placebo for 14 days.
