Research summary
The aim of this study is to examine five specific gut bacteria in patients with Crohn's disease, which have previously been implicated in its pathogenesis. Our research group has previously studied patient tailored exclusion diets in Crohn's disease - based on an IgG4 blood test, with promising results. The blood test tells us from a group of 14 common food types, what the patient may be sensitive to. We wish to further develop this work and see if these five gut bacteria are affected by these diets. This will be a randomised cross-over trial, so that each patient will have a four week period on a tailored exclusion diet, where they are advised to avoid four foods that the blood test suggests they may be sensitive to. They will also have a four week period on a sham exclusion diet, where they are told to avoid four foods that their blood test does not suggest they are sensitive to. The diets will be in a random order for each patient and the diets will be interspersed with a four week period on their normal diet. The effect of the diets on their Crohn's disease will be measured from blood tests, stool samples and questionnaires.
