  • Research summary

Swabs will be taken from the dentures, and the area of the mouth which underlies the denture plate, of dental patients both with and without denture stomatitis. Patients which donate samples will also be asked to fill a short questionnaire about their lifestyle, general health, and any antimicrobial therapy (antibiotics or antifungals) they have received in the past 3 months. The collected swabs would be used to isolate specific bacteria and fungi which may be present in the samples. This data would then be used to look for a correlation with disease states (in particular denture sore mouth [stomatitis]), microbial presence and also other collected data. The swabs may also be used to characterise the resident bacteria and fungi of the samples. The microbiological data collected will allow us to look for correlations between the resident microbes, lifestyle factors and denture stomatitis.
