Research summary
Ankle fracture is a common injury that accounts for 14% of hospital fracture admissions. Despite this, little is known about what matters most to patients and professionals about the impact of an ankle fracture. Today, when talking about the impact of injuries or health treatments we say ‘health outcomes’. However, there is currently little guidance following ankle fracture about which outcomes matter most to patients or healthcare professionals, or which outcomes best show the results from treatment. Consequently, lots of different health outcomes are often assessed. When studies measure different health outcomes it can be very difficult to compare the results from different studies. This study aims to reach agreement on the most important health outcomes that should be included in future research. This is called a ‘core outcome set’ and usually includes about 7 or 8 outcomes to be included in future research. In this study, we ask patient and allied health professionals to complete an online questionnaire. There are three rounds; in each round participants are asked to consider a list of outcomes and determine which are most important. In the second and third rounds, they are asked to say which are the most important to them out of the most popular in the previous round.
