Research summary
The incidence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate and the disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and financial burden to the NHS.
Lifestyle changes such as diet, weight loss and exercise can have a beneficial effect on diabetes and in reducing the risk of patients with pre-diabetes going on to develop diabetes.
Studies looking at lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes have mostly been carried out in hospital research settings in patients with pre-diabetes and more research in other clinical settings is needed.
A number of barriers to people engaging in exercise have been described in the literature, and this research study will identify and explore barriers to exercise in patients with pre-diabetes, in a primary care setting, by means of detailed semi-structured interviews.
The results obtained will be written up as part of a Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath and may be used to guide and plan future studies, if this is felt to be useful and appropriate.
