Research summary
We know a lot about how kidney dialysis impacts upon survival, however we know quite little about how dialysis impacts upon a person’s quality of life and general wellbeing, particularly for older people. Knowing the impact of dialysis on quality of life and wellbeing will help patients and their families make more informed decisions about their treatment options for advanced kidney disease.
The purpose of this study is to survey older people and their family caregivers about their own quality of life and their ability to do the things that are important to them (for example, doing things that make them feel valued, feeling secure about the future, feeling independent). We will then compare the quality of life and wellbeing results between patients who are treated with kidney dialysis and those who are treated with renal supportive care. We will also see if there is a difference in the quality of life and wellbeing of caregivers who look after patients treated with dialysis or renal supportive care.
The results from this study will provide an awareness of the broader impact of dialysis on an individual’s capability to do the things that are important to them, and an evidence base for the development of interventions to improve wellbeing for patients and their caregivers.
