Research summary
Patients with IBD have been particularly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, there was evidence of delays in diagnosis, difficulty accessing investigations and long waits for surgery. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated this.
Surgery for IBD has also drastically changed with the pandemic. Operations have been delayed and cancelled leaving a sizeable waiting list. Patients now undergo routine swabbing before coming to hospital. Patients may have to isolate before surgery. They may not be allowed visitors. Services have been reconfigured where they can so elective surgery takes place at regional sites away from Covid-19 wards. We now know there are significant risks with having surgery and catching Covid-19.
There is a need to explore the patient experience of undergoing surgery in the Covid era. We need to find out the patient viewpoint on these changes to how surgery is delivered. We need to find out what is important to IBD patients having surgery during this challenging time.
We aim to carry out a qualitative study where patients are interviewed to explore these issues and gain an insight into their experience.
