Research summary
Large numbers of people will experience psychological and financial problems due to COVID-19. Financial difficulties are known to be a risk factor for common mental health problems. People with problem debt are twice as likely to develop serious depression and recovery rates for those experiencing debt problems are almost half that for people without a debt problem. IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Treatment) provides accessible treatments for people with anxiety and depression. Money advice is very effective in resolving financial difficulties, however people experiencing mental health problems often struggle to access this advice. We need to work quickly to introduce debt advice into IAPT to ensure that relevant services are in place at this time of crisis.
Through this qualitative research, we want to generate an intervention for IAPT services, which will combine money advice with psychological therapy. We will do this through focus groups/interviews with IAPT service users and therapists, and debt advisors.
